WALKING
Whatever your level of ability, you’ll find a walk that’s perfect for you in Dingle. Surrounded by glorious views, the thunder of the waves, and the call of birds, it is easy to get swept up in the beauty of it all and forget that you’re even walking at all.
Suggested Routes – Easy
A walk that certainly packs a lot of punch for very little effort is the cliff walk at Ballyferriter called Siúlóid Chuas na nEighe. Just over three kilometres long, it starts and ends at the car park above Clochar Beach, about 13km from Dingle town. The views are exceptional, and the walk is flat, with several stiles.
For a slightly longer but no less enjoyable loop walk, try the 5km Lúb na Cille walk in Dún Chaoin. This starts and ends in the Blasket Centre car park and is way-marked. Then there’s the Slí na Sláinte walking route in Dingle Town. This 3.3km walk starts at the roundabout on the Tralee entrance to Dingle and is marked by the easily recognisable Irish Heart Foundation signs.
Longer Walking Routes
Siúlóid Cholmáin or Colman’s Walk starts and ends in Ventry. You’ll take in sections of the beach, as well as quiet little side roads or boithríns on this 7km loop. Begin your walk in the village and head uphill past the post office and school for spectacular views of the sea. You will also take in historical sites including Cill Cholmain, an early Christian monastery for which the walk is named, as well as the ruins of Rathinane Castle.
On the road between Camp and Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula, you will find signposts for Glanteenasig Wood, home to 450 hectares of state-owned forestry, teeming with streams, lakes and waterfalls. It is also home to the Glanteenasig Wood – River Trail. In addition to three waymarked trails, Glanteenasig Wood is home to about 8km of forest roads.
A more challenging hike is Sauce Creek Walking Trail (Siúlóid a’ tSáis), four to five hours of walking in bogland and hills close to Sauce Creek and Mounta Brandon. This walk starts and ends in Brandon Village. You might also try the 8.5km Slí na Dúnta in Ballyferriter, which starts and ends at the Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, and takes in the picturesque lanes and beaches of the area.
